? What does Ginnungagap mean?
Ginnungagap was the great space between Nifilheim and Muspelheim, before the earth was created. I have chosen to name this site Ginnungagap because it includes everything in Nordic mythology. To make it simple; Everything started with Ginnungagap. Now as well as then.

? Why does Ginnungagap exist?
Ginnungagap was created because I didn't think there were too many sites on the net treating different subjects in Nordic mythology, all I could find was sites that contained only special things such as gods or asatru. I am trying to make Ginnungagap to a site where you can find everything (..well, at least a lot).

? How long has Ginnungagap been on the internet?
Well, actually it's soon time for the ten years jubilee. The work with Ginnungagap was initiated during the summer 1988 and the site was online December 1988. To illustrate what a long time 10 years is on the internet I have made a timeline which you can look at below.

Timeline

? Who is Ginnungagap designed for?
Nowadays we don't read much about the Nordic gods in school, so I have tried to make the site a bit educational, but the major group of visitors that I expect is people who are really interested, like people who belive in the gods. But I have also tried not to make the site too heavy for people who are "newbies", and give explanations where it is needed.

? Why don't you have more pictures?
First of all, copyright is a pretty good reason. But, because of the Asgard-era was before the time of the cameras I guess there aren't too many good pictures to put up anyway. But I do have a Picture Gallery.

? Many gods have different names. How do you pick?
In different sources many of the gods have different names and sometimes it's not clear if an action was done by one or another god. If I have to decide I often take the god I consider is the most truly to have done the action. When it comes to names I uses 'the most Swedish name" in the Swedish page and "the more Icelandic or English name" in the English part of the site.

? What sources have you used?
Most of the information is taken from a lot of places and situations such as books, exhibitions, friends and the net. But when I was going to write it all down I used a couple of Nordic mythology encyclopedias. Some good Swedish books I have used are FornNordiskt Lexikon - Sammanställt av Åke Ohlmarks (Publisher Tiden 1983/94) and Vem är vem i nordisk mytologi by Åke Hultkrantz (Publisher Rabén & Sjögren 1991). Another god Swedish book is Vikingatidens ABC (Historiska Statens Muesum 1995). The Eddas I have used are the English The Elder Edda translated by Paul B. Taylor and W. H. Auden (Faber & Faber 1969) and the Swedish Edda - De nordiska guda och hjältesagorna translated by Erik Brate (Niloe).

Last read book: Asatro i tiden, Fredrik Stark 2000 Språk och folkminnesinstitutet.

? Can I trust the material on this site?
On the internet you should always be critical to eveything you see. It is even more important these days when eveybody can publish anything. You should always think "Who made this?" and "Why?". In this case I am trying to share my knowledge about the nordic myths. But always stay critical surfing the net! Just because it is written down and published it doesn't have to be true.

? The info about something have changed completely. Why?
Just like the gods different names, their family, dwellings and things, depends on where you read about it. I seldom make any bigger changes on the material already on this site (that is because I don't write anything unless I have read the information in many places). But it happens that I think another alternative seems more reliable than what I have thought earlier, simply because it's written in more books and explanes other events. This sometimes leads to changed information in this site. Another usual thing is for example a goddess whose both parents are giants, but still she is an aesirgoddess and lives in Asgard.

? How do I link to Ginnungagap?
If you want to put a link to Ginnungagap from your homepage you could use ordinary textlinks like [a href="http://www.ginnungagap.info/ggeindex.asp"]Ginnungagap[/a]. Observe that the "hooks" should be changed into "htmlhooks". If you link to http://www.ginnungagap.info you will get to the Swedish page first and from there hit the English button. I have done two banners for white and black backgrounds. You can just rightclick at the banner you want and save it on your harddisk. Note that these banners doesn't look good on any other background than white or black, so don't make them transparant.

? Why do I remove forum entries/links?
I am sad to say that I have removed a few guestbook entries/links from my guestbook. This is nothing I would like to do and nothing that I like to spend time on. I'm not planning to make my guestbook a forum where people dicusses racism, but if somebody have something interesting to say about the subject it's really important the he/she not spends his/her time yelling at earlier entries. If I see a guestbook entry that I think will do more bad than good I will remove it. Same thing with links.

? How often do I update Ginnungagap?
I update Ginnungagap a couple of times a month. Bigger changes like new categories or stories can come anyday. The only thing that is updated monthly is the Knowledgetest that gets new questions and the old ones plus their answers gets moved to the Last Knowledgetest. Mostly of the updates are small things like puttung in new gods, giants, animals et.c. I spend about the same time improving the material I already have as adding new information.

? Who makes this site?
Well, it is made by me, Snofrid :) I would like to give a special thanks to Johan, Jonas, Eric, Peter and Cissi. And offcourse the visitors must have some credit too. This site wouldn't be what it is without you. Thanks! And a big thanks to all the Ginnunga Gapare.

? Reviews and nominations?
Ginnungagap have been reviewed in the Swedish magazine Internet World twice both 1998 and 1999. The first review gave 9 of 10 possible (5/98) and the second time it got 5 of 10 (6/98). 1999 Ginnungagap got 9 of 10 (3/99) again and then 7 of 10 (8/99). The same year the site was reviewed in another Swedish magazine named InternetGuiden (The Internet Guide) which gave the total score 4 of 5 (made from Containing 5 Design 3 Links 3 in number 5/99). Ginnungagap have also recieved a Tigerlink nomination (week 10/99) from Annica Tiger for good html-programming. Week 40 (00) I proudly received the award "Högtflygande Hräsvälg" from Jovur. In November the same year I also got the H-link of the month by the pre-historical site Homo. I thank you all very much!

? What about copyright on this site?
I do not claim any kind of copyright on the information included on this site since I want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to read about the exciting mythology :) It would be appreciated if you made a link to my site if you copy a larger mass of text. And to all of you doing some kind of work in school: Remember that teachers are smarter than you'd think! It isn't very fun to get caught as a cheater, is it? That's not at all how you should behave according to Odin and the lads :)

? Contact for collaborations, sponsorship, advertising etc.?
I am always open for suggestions, so please contact me by mail info@ginnungagap.info. Ginnungagap reaches a lot of interested people every day, all year round, and I'd be happy to show my statistics from Google Analytics if there is an interest in cooperating.
